20 Poem Fabric Scrolls: A Pictographic Morphology Of A Poem

$200.00

Limited Edition of 1 Artwork.

Introduction:

This artwork is a creative interpretation of a Persian poem, using a different medium to communicate its essence. The piece is part of a series of three artworks that use poetry as a linguistic tool to create non-verbal, visceral imagery.

Composition:

The composition of these twenty fabric scrolls acts as a pictographic morphology of the poem, originally written on a flat piece of sheer cotton fabric. The poem has been cut, rolled, and arranged into a new structure, creating a visual fragment that hints at faded traces of ancient writing. The added detailing of pearls, pink, and iridescent grey beads renders a tender intricacy, evoking jeweled scraps of an antique shawl.

A Bit of History:

Scrolls have a long history as a format for writing messages or books and were considered a prestigious format for important documents. Their usage dates back to ancient times, particularly in cultures like those of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt.  At that time, scrolls were typically made by gluing together several sheets of papyrus or parchment, and then rolling them up around a wooden or metal rod. Persian poetry can be traced back to the Avestan hymns of Zoroastrianism dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE.

Featured Poem:

20 Poem Scrolls is a contemporary artwork inspired by the beautiful ancient tradition of scroll writings. We hope this artwork can bring you the pleasure of “sensing” a Persian poem that is scribed among the layers of these illuminated fabric scrolls and take your imagination on a joyful reverie. ”In this house I feel closer to the moist obscurity of grass

I can hear the garden breathing

And the sound of darkness when dropping from a leaf

And the sound of a light coughing from behind a tree

I can hear the sniffing of water at through the crack of each rock

I can hear swallows dripping down from the spring’s ceiling

And the clear sound of opening and closing windows of solitude

And the pure sound of love vaguely casting off its skin

And the condensation of longing to fly in the wing

And the cracking of the soul’s resistance

I can hear the sound of footsteps of longing

And the sound of footsteps of blood’s law in the vein

The pulse of dawn in the pigeon’s well

    The heartbeat of Thursday evening

The flow of clove pink in thought

The pure neigh of truth from distance.”
